The time of year has come for the Senior Class to be finalizing their future plans. The Class of ‘08 is small but mighty and out of its 25 students, nearly 88% will be continuing their education. Out of that 88%, 40% will be attending a four-year college, 16% will be attending a technical school, 20% will be attending a two-year college, and 8% will be continuing their schooling through the armed services.
Out of ten students attending a 4-year college, six students will be attending Kansas State University in Manhattan. Garrett Stryker plans to major in mechanical engineering. Justine Walsh is majoring in elementary education and will also be on the rowing team. Jackie Schuh plans to major in hotel and restaurant management with a minor in Spanish Studies. Brittani Whiting plans to major in Veterinarian medicine. Dan Minihan will major in automotive engineering, and Quincie Botkin plans to major in marketing and minor in Spanish studies.
Kirk Duensing and Lindsey Coggins plan to attend the University of Kansas in Lawrence this fall. Their expected majors are biology (pre-medicine) and Political Science (pre-law), respectively.
Caty Roepke plans to attend Pittsburg State University and major in art education. Andrea Brandt will be attending Fort Hays State University to major in nursing.
Five students are attending a two-year college as part of their future plans. Three of those are attending Cloud County Community College in Concordia: Jamie Warders plans to major in nursing with an art minor, Kyle Dixon plans to study graphic design, and Samantha Holle intends to major in child care.
Tiffany Davis and Andrew Watt both have plans to attend Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Nebraska. Davis will major in dental hygiene with a minor in dental assisting. Watt plans to major in business.
Attending a vocational technical school are four seniors: Johnathan Oatney, Gunnar Zidek, Travis Miller, and Alene Brandt. Oatney plans to attend Manhattan Area Technical School (MATC) and become a heavy equipment operator. Zidek plans to study auto body and collision repair, also at MATC. Miller will attend MATC and major in heating and air conditioning. Alene Brandt plans to attend Northeast Kansas Technical School in Beloit and major in culinary arts.
Two seniors are headed into the armed services after graduation. Zac Bauman and Derrik Russell both plan to enter the Air Force. Both seniors will attend training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Bauman will leave May 20, and Russell will leave June 30.
One member of the class will be entering the work force after graduation. Christy Lindsay plans to work at Casey’s. Three seniors have yet to decide on their future plans. These students include Lisa Hogan, Adam Nemechek, and Kyle Yungeberg.
"I’ve really enjoyed being part of this class. Having such a small number of students gave it more of a ‘family’ feeling. It’s going to be a bittersweet goodbye at graduation. I wish the class lots of luck," said Coggins, Senior Class President. Commencement will be on May 17, at 2 PM at Valley Heights High School.
"The Class of 2008 is a very creative, talented class and I wish them the best of luck in the future," said class sponsor Lora Whetzal.
